Negative Test

Abby left for USU this morning. I’m excited for her, but we miss her every time she leaves. As an athlete at USU, Abby is subject to Covid testing whenever they feel it’s necessary. Today she had to get tested. If you test positive, you have to sit out for a couple weeks. I was a little nervous for Abby because I’ve been sick. She tested negative! I consider that a blessing from the Lord.

Walker had a basketball game at 9p tonight. He performed well. He’s getting pretty tall (~6′) and his hair is going really curly. He’s very skilled in basketball fundamentals and he’s disciplined to do things right. It makes him a huge asset to the team; you always know he’s going to get the right position and box out (for example). His team killed the other team. It was fun to see them do well.

1 Nephi 11-13

1 Nephi 11

  • Nephi “desired to know the thing that [his] father had seen,” “and believing that the Lord was able to make them known unto [him],” “as [he] sat pondering in [his] heart…” “[he] was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord…” (v1)
    • Nephi desired to know
    • Nephi believed the Lord could tell him what he wanted to know
    • Nephi pondered the subject
    • Nephi was given a vision through the Holy Ghost
  • The Holy Ghost first asks Nephi what he desires. (v2)
  • Nephi believed the words of his father. (v5)
  • Nephi is granted what he desires “because thou believest in the Son of the most high God…” (v6)
    • The vision is to be a sign to Nephi and he’ll also see the Lord Jesus Christ and be expected to witness of Him. (v7)
  • The Holy Ghost shows Nephi the tree, what when asked what it means, the Holy Ghost leaves Nephi and a vision of the Christ’s birth. A new angle appears to guide Nephi through this vision. (v8-21)
  • After the vision of Christ, Nephi knows that the tree of life “is the Love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men…” (v22)
    • “…it is the most desirable above all things.”
    • How does the vision of Christ’s birth result in a “love of God” interpretation of the fruit on the tree?
      • The vision represents the greatest example of love that Heavenly Father has given each one of us. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
  • Nephi learns the rod of iron is the word of God. (v25)
  • Nephi learns the waters at the base of the tree also represent the love of God. (v25)
  • Nephi witnesses some of the Lord’s ministry:
    • Ministering among the people. (v24)
    • Being baptized. (v27)
    • Healing the sick and casting out unclean spirits. (v31)
    • Wrongly accused, sentenced, and crucified. (v32-33)
  • The great and spacious building “was the pride of the world; and it fell…” (v36)
  • Any entity that fights against the Apostles of Jesus Christ will fail.
    • “And the angel of the Lord spake unto me again, saying: Thus shall be the destruction of all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, that shall fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” (v36)

1 Nephi 12

  • Nephi’s vision continues with the angel. (v1)
  • Nephi sees his people in the promised land fighting over generations. (v1-3)
  • Nephi sees a “mist of darkness” over the promised land and the great destruction that comes due to the “great and terrible judgements of the Lord.” (v4-5)
  • Nephi sees Jesus Christ visit those in America that were not destroyed. (v6-10)
    • Jesus Christ visits.
    • Twelve apostles are chosen and receive the Holy Ghost.
  • Nephi sees the final battle between the Nephites & Lamanites. (v15)
  • The account seems to quickly pivot to:
    • The “fountain of filthy water” or “river” being explained to be the “depths of hell.” (v16)
    • The “mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil…” (v17)
      • “blindeth the eyes”
      • “hardeneth the hearts”
      • “leadeth them away to broad roads”
      • resulting in “they perish and are lost.”
    • The “large and spacious building” is the “vain imaginations and the pride of the children of men.” (v18)
    • The “great and terrible gulf” that is between the tree and the building is “the word of justice of the Eternal God, and the Messiah who is the Lamb of God…” (v18)
  • The account then pivots back to the great battle. (v19)
    • Nephi highlights that it’s the “pride of my seed” and the “temptations of the devil” that cause the Nephites to fall. (v19)

1 Nephi 13

  • Nephi’s vision with the angle continues. (v1)
  • Nephi sees a great church formed among the nations and kingdoms of the gentiles. (v1-4)
    • The church is “abominable above all other churches…” that was founded by the devil (v5-6)
  • Nephi sees Gentile explorers, inspired by the Spirit of God, be led to the promised land. (v12-13)
    • “I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.” (v14) The Lord used the Gentile explorers to punish the wicked Lamanites.
    • The Gentiles inherit the promised land and are blessed by the Lord. (v15-16)
    • Nephi sees the Gentiles in America win their freedom from the Gentiles from Europe. (v17-19)
  • Nephi sees the Gentiles with the bible. (v20)
    • The book goes forth in purity from the Jews (containing the covenants of the Lord) to the Gentiles, but the great and abominable church “have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord…” (v20-26)
    • The deletions were done on purpose. (v27)
    • Many “plain and precious things were taken away” from the bible as it went “through the hands of the great and abominable church” and the result has been that “an exceedingly great many do stumble, stumble, yea, insomuch that Satan hath great power over them.” (v28-29)
    • After some chastening, the Lord will be merciful to Lehi’s descendants and the Gentile and bring forth the Book of Mormon and restore the Church of Jesus Christ.
    • The Book of Mormon will “establish the truth of the [bible]… and shall make known the plain and precious things which have been taken away from them;” (v40)

First Day Back 2022

After a long Christmas break, I went back to work today. Getting up when it was cold and dark was a challenge, but I did it and spent some good time in the Book of Mormon before 8a. I’ll get better at this.

My first meeting was with Michael Dabriel. He’s on my team and works from the UK. Since we last spoke his whole family got Covid and his granddad passed away. We had a long discussion about dealing with all that. I got a chance to share my faith and view on death. I hope it helped him. Maybe it will spark an interest in Michael to reach out to God. Only time will tell.

We got to watch Chloe’s JV basketball game at Westlake at 5:15p. She played well. Richard Spiker sat by us most of the time.

Paula and I attended the 7:40p endowment session at the Jordan River Temple. It was nice to be back. It was quiet and peaceful. I need to work at making attending weekly at habit again.

After a week with us, Molly had to go back home. It was sad. She is a beautiful person in so many ways and wonderful to have around. She has worked extremely hard to do well in her hair school program and the Lord is blessing her. She’s known for being one of the best. She has such a bright future. It’s fun to watch.

Best Day Yet

Health wise, today was my best day yet. I believe all the fasting for my vision to be restored helped to improve it and my energy was higher than its ever been.

I spent a few hours studying my scriptures and finished it off by going up Israel Canyon and praying while looking at the mountains across the lake. While praying, I felt the Holy Ghost witness to me the Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love me. It went on for a few minutes; it was wonderful. I asked if there were things I still needed to repent of and nothing came to mind. It was fun to drive on the snowy roads too.

I spent more time this afternoon on my React Task app. It’s been very rewarding to exercise that learning muscle. It’s become a 2022 goal.

Thank you Lord for the best day yet. I hope tomorrow will be even better. Back to work.

Come Follow Me New Testament

Moses 1, Abraham 3

Moses 1

  • God (Jesus Christ) speaks to a transfigured Moses face to face. (v2)
  • God conveys to Moses that He is more powerful, knowing, glorious, loving, and capable than anything imaginable.
  • God teaches Moses that he is His son and in “similitude of mine Only Begotten… the Savior…”
    • I believe the Father – Son relationship reveals that Moses has divine potential.
  • Moses sees the world and all its inhabitants. (I want that experience.)

When I read of Moses’ experience seeing the world, I’m reminded of a time in my youth when the grandeur of God’s creations was manifest to me in a spiritual way. When I was a senior in high school, some of my friends and I hiked Mount Blakiston (~9600ft) in Waterton Lakes National park. I remember getting to the peak and having spectacular views. When I looked west, there were mountains as far as the eye could see. Looking east revealed the mountains quickly turn to foothills and then prairies stretching forever. As I looked east, the Holy Ghost witnessed to me that all the magnificence that I was experiencing was created by God. I was “greatly marveled and wondered.” Although much less significant, I believe my experience was like Moses’. That experience was about 26 years ago and I’ve always remembered it.

  • Moses is left to himself and he realizes compared to God, he is nothing. (v10-11)

Understanding that we are nothing compared to God should help us be humble. Knowing we have divine potential to become like God with His help should produce confidence to keep the commandments and follow Jesus Christ.

  • Satan comes to test Moses. (v12)
    • Satan tries to deceive Moses to think that he isn’t a son of God, but a son of Man. Satan also is so bold as to ask Moses to worship him.
  • Moses immediately recognized the deception. He stated the truth: “I am a son of God, in the similitude of his Only Begotten…” Moses also recognized that Satan had no glory compared to God. (v13)
  • Moses recognizes that the “Spirit hath not altogether widthdrawn from me” and it helped him judge between Satan and God. (v15)
  • Moses commands Satan to leave: “Get thee hence, Satan; deceive me not;” (v16)
  • Moses remembers that God taught him to pray to Him in the name of the Only Begotten.
  • Moses states to Satan that he will continue to pray to God because he has felt of His glory and has more things to learn. (v18)
  • Satan is infuriated and “ranted upon the earth…”
  • The rant was such that “Moses began to fear exceedingly; and as he began to fear, he saw the bitterness of hell.” (v20)

I believe fear is the window/door to hell. We need to avoid it at all costs.

  • Moses is able to escape the “bitterness of hell” by “calling upon God, he received strength…” Moses commanded Satan to leave. Satan starts to tremble, but doesn’t leave. Then Moses commands “In the name of the Only Begotten” for Satan to leave. (v21)

Commanding in the name of Jesus Christ is something Satan and his minions have to respect and obey.

  • Reluctantly and “with a loud voice, with weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth; and he departed hence, even from the presence of Moses…” (v22)
  • Moses then looks to God. He is filled with the Holy Ghost and God and His glory returns. (v24-25)
  • Moses learns the God is with him and that he has been chosen. (v25)
  • Moses is again shown the world and the people on it.
  • Moses asks when God created the earth and put people on it? (v30)
  • God replies that He has His reasons.
  • Moses persists and asks God again. (v36)
  • God eventually replies:

For behold, this my work and my glory-to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. (v39)

What an amazing blessing that we have a Heavenly Father (and Lord & Savior Jesus Christ) of such incredible glory, power, knowledge, and love whose complete focus is to realize our immortality and eternal life.

1 Nephi 10

Nephi talks about all the revelations his father is getting. Lehi talks about the coming Messiah (he knew it was about 600 years in the future), John the Baptist baptizing Him, and the scattering and gathering of Israel.

Nephi then states:

17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.
18 For he is the same yesterday, today, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.
19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

The bolded phrases of these verses always strikes me. I believe that Nephi is inviting each one of us to have the desire to see, hear, and know the thing Lehi experienced; and promises that if we diligently seek these mysteries, they will be revealed to us through the power of the Holy Ghost. I’ve expressed my desire to know these things. Now I must figure out how to adequately seek.

New Church Time

Our ward meeting time changed to 10:30a today. Having the extra 1.5hrs in the morning to help get the family ready was so great. It was a little tender mercy; 9a church in 2021 was a real struggle.

It was also fast Sunday today. I decided to fast that my vision be restored. I was a little nervous if I’d be able to make it the entire day considering my health issues recently. Fasting became my way to exercise faith and make a sacrifice for a needed blessing. My Sunday meetings were great. I felt a few moments of weakness, but was able to push through. I also invited my siblings and Paula’s siblings to fast for me. I believe the combined faith helped. My vision seems to be improving. I even had a couple of moments of perfectly clear vision. It was wonderful and gives me hope that my vision will soon be fully restored.

My Sunday meetings were peaceful, uplifting, and though provoking. I’m grateful to be able to meet in person and be edified by the thoughts of others. The church and it’s members are a real blessing to me and my family.

We made a turkey dinner today. It was lovely and delicious. A lot of the kids helped prepare the meal and it was enjoyed by all. Emma and Danny Swan recently moved to Utah for school and joined us for dinner. We ate and played games. It was a lot of fun. Now we’re all getting to bed early as school starts in the morning.

Weather

We had a pretty good snow storm come through this evening. We were blessed by the Lord to enjoy safety in our travels. Molly and Shelby arrived home safely from St. George at about 11:30p. Earlier in the day Chloe arrived safely from Cedar City, and Willy’s Bball team and our family arrived home from Draper after traveling through the storm. God is good!

Sing 2 Movie

How has God touched our family today?

We bought tickets for the movie Sing 2 a week or so ago. Today finally came along and the kids could hardly wait until our 4:50p show time. When we got there we realized our show time was really 3:50p. We were devastated. Fortunately, there was a 4:30p showing that had the entire front row vacant. The hand of God left us the front row so we could slide in a few minutes late.

The movie was really good. I was moved a number of times. The music was perfect. The kids loved it. Now we wait until we can buy it for home.

Learning from Covid

This is what I’m learning from Covid:

  • Good health is a real blessing and should never be taken for granted. I’m a pretty bad sick person. I’m not sure how to change that, but I’ll at least pray for it.
  • My compassion for people who have had Covid or will one day have Covid has significantly increased. My experience has been really hard for me. Anyone going through this deserves a break.
  • Be patient. I watch others get Covid and recover quicker than me and without some of the side affects. I’m focused on the Lord’s will and what I’m to learn from this. I have faith the Lord will heal me.
  • Trust in the Lord and turn to him in all things.
